This amazing book is written in the rhythms of the everyday life of a rural veterinarian in New England. It is arranged by the seasons of his life, his family’s life and the nature that surrounds them. The Call refers to each call that is made to him from the surrounding countryside to doctor the animals, or put them down. And what he thinks of on his drive back home, his kid’s response to his return and his wife’s, and what she’s cooked for dinner. It is funny and sad, and beautifully crafted.
